Workshop Description

This two-day experiential workshop will provide an overview of evidence-based cognitive behavioral strategies that can be utilized for the treatment of patients with suicide-related ideation and/or behaviors. Participants will learn about basic cognitive behavioral strategies for structuring sessions – including setting a collaborative agenda, assigning action plan(s), and eliciting feedback. Participants will become familiar with Dr. Aaron Beck’s cognitive model for suicide as a framework for conceptualizing and treating their patients. The components of an efficacious, outpatient Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CT-SP) protocol will be reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on specific techniques of intervention (e.g., assisting patients with the suicide narrative, building skills such as modifying unhelpful thoughts, problem solving, instilling hope, planning for safety, and preventing relapse) in order to assist providers in maximizing the safety of individuals at risk for suicide. Information about helpful online tools and resources will be provided. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice strategies in the group setting. Questions about expected treatment challenges will be addressed. Providers will learn about and discuss the importance of self-care strategies, particularly as they provide services to this highly vulnerable and challenging patient population.

Overall Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants will better:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the public health significance of suicide.
  2. Use the cognitive behavioral model to conceptualize patients with suicide-related ideation and/or behaviors.
  3. Structure cognitive behavioral sessions, set a collaborative agenda, review and assign action plan(s), and elicit/provide feedback.
  4. Identify underdeveloped skills that exacerbate suicide risk based on the cognitive behavioral case conceptualization.
  5. Implement cognitive and behavioral strategies within each of the three phases of an outpatient protocol for the prevention of suicide.
  6. Complete a step by step safety plan collaboratively with patients reporting suicide-related ideation and/or behaviors.
  7. Understand how to implement a step by step relapse prevention protocol to reduce future suicidal crisis.
  8. Understand the importance of self-care when providing services to a challenging patient population.
