The term "jail diversion" refers to services that divert adults with mental illnesses and/or developmental disabilities, and persons with co-occurring substance use disorders from jail. This service is intended for individuals who commit non-violent felonies or misdemeanors, and links those individuals with community-based treatment and support services. The individual thus avoids or spends a significantly reduced time period in jail and/or lockups on the current charge or on violations of probation in turn for agreeing to participate in treatment.
