Many people find work a fulfilling and worthwhile use of their time and skills. You may have given up work due to mental illness and now feel ready to get back.

Before you decide to go back to work you should research the subject fully. Questions you might ask yourself include:

They can help you develop a resume, fill out employment applications, improve your interviewing skills, identify available job opportunities, and much more.  Another good resource is the Michigan Rehabilitation Services section on the State of Michigan's website, www.michigan.gov.

There are many different options for someone wishing to work.  Each one has its pros and cons and you will need to investigate which suits your needs best. You may start on one and progress to another. Which you choose may be influenced by what is available in your area:


Starting work may affect your right to Social Security and/or Medicaid benefits or the amount you get. The benefits system is very complex and this presents only a brief summary of how you may be affected if you choose to start work. If you are on benefits you should contact your Department of Human Services worker to calculate if you will be better or worse off.
