Recovery
St. Clair County Community Mental Health applies a recovery-oriented system of care for the individuals we serve. We are proud to be part of an important change in health care that builds upon each individual's strengths and abilities to support the desire for meaningful participation and inclusion in their communities. As a person evolves within the recovery process, they are challenged to make new goals and continue to live the best life possible.
What does recovery mean to you? Recovery means remembering who you are and using your strengths to become all you were meant to be. Through the Recovery model, people realize that although they may not have control over their symptoms or disability, they do have full control over their lives. The principles of recovery empower individuals to reach for their dreams and find hope in tomorrow. There is no single definition for recovery. Rather, recovery takes the person-centered approach. Recovery is unique to each individual and is based on what recovery means to you.
What We Know About Recovery
- Recovery is an up-and-down process
- Symptoms may remain, but people still RECOVER!
- Symptoms are less troublesome and happen less often.
- Recovery can happen whether or not we still take medication.
- Recovery does not mean that one did not have a mental illness.
- Recovery from the consequences of being ill is often harder than recovering from the illness itself.
