Fragile X Syndrome
![]()
Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited cause of mental impairment, affecting approximately 1 in 3,600 males and 1 in 4,000 to 6,000 females. Fragile X is second only to Down Syndrome as a cause of mental retardation.
Fragile X, like Autism Spectrum Disorder, has a wide range of levels that affect the individuals. Early intervention is important and treatments include: speech, physical and occupational therapies.
In addition to moderate to severe mental retardation, other characteristics of individuals with Fragile X Syndrome may include large ears, large testes, large jaw, speech delays, prominent forehead, double-jointedness, autistic symptoms and occasional self-mutilation. The face is typically long and narrow, and a high arched palate, large ears, and dental problems are present. In young children, delayed motor development, hyperactivity, behavioral problems, toe walking, and occasional seizures can occur.
Standard treatment for Fragile X includes special education, speech, occupational, and sensory integration training; and behavior modification programs. Surgical correction of heart defects is sometimes necessary.
