Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension and fear characterized by physical symptoms such as palpitations, sweating, and feelings of stress. Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a stressful event, anxiety disorders are chronic, relentless, and can grow progressively worse if not treated.
Types of anxiety disorders can vary. They include:
All adults experience some anxiety; this is normal and expected. Anxiety becomes a problem when it interrupts a person's normal activities, like attending work, making friends, or sleeping. Persistent and intense anxiety that disrupts daily routine is a mental health problem that requires intervention.
Children and teens have anxiety in their lives just as adults do. Stressful life events such as starting school, moving, or the loss of a parent can trigger the onset of an anxiety disorder. Children with anxiety disorders are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, to have less developed social skills, and to be more vulnerable to substance abuse.
